Seems I only update this thing after attending an amusement park, today is no exception!
This weekend was the annual carnival in los alamitos and concurrent rooftop party at kevin's. It was a good time, and I was especially relieved that it was a good time since I was developing a track record for having a crap time at parties. I think my antisocial streak is fading.
lets get dizzy! I rode the tilt-a-whirl and kamikaze before I ran out of money.
I'm also excited for next weekend - long memorial day weekend + my birthday. Last year we went to the zoo, this year I'm planning something equally juvenile like go-karts or iceskating. wheee!
oh, and "Bodies: the Exhibition" is in town, so we will try to catch that. I saw bodyworlds 2 in LA and it blew my mind.
and here are some past QotDs that I want to answer because I like them:
Yes! our Tokyo/Osaka trip is only 4 weeks away and we are getting unbelievably excited! everyone keeps trying to tell us what to expect but we both know that this trip is going to completely blow away any expectations and so we're keeping completely open minds (and trying to be good and save lots of money...). My passport hasn't arrived yet but that's the only loose string and I'm expecting it any day now. I'm trying to go out hiking a few times a week to get my legs in shape for all the walking."Are you taking a vacation this summer (or this season)? Where are you headed and who's going with you?"
hostess fruit pies! I love you, pocket of syrupy sin! What item(s) do you have to prevent yourself from buying at the grocery store?
also, candy from the impulse buy aisle, brownie mix, crescent rolls, cookie doh, anything instantly delicious, buttery, flaky and fattening. YUM.
What's your musical horoscope? (Put your music player on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.)
this list is totally gonna incriminate me for stealing a big chunk of someone's music downloads ;)
- Kern that bembo tighter - Severed Heads
- Bubbles (Extracting Au from H2O) Ennio Morricone
- L'Enfer Des Formes - Stereolab
- drop and roll - Simian (geez, my ipod has played this song three times this week... good song though)
- Midnight Bicycle Mystery - Deerhoof
- Where there's a will there's a whalebone - Islands
- Icct Hedral - Aphex Twin
- Fixed Income - DJ Shadow
- Phantom - Broadcast
- Hearts on Fire - Clor (poor Clor)
hmm, not much of a horroscope...
mildly related rant: I frigging hate it when you screw up adding large numbers of songs to your iTunes and end up making multiples of the same songs. Why does iTunes have an option to "show duplicate songs" but no option to "remove multiple songs???"
What is your favorite children's movie?
When I was a little kid, no other movie had me more emotionally distraught than The Brave Little Toaster. watching old appliances get destroyed at the dump was just about as hard as when they put the dog to sleep. I haven't watched it as an adult, But I bet I would still cry.
Yet every time it was on TV, I would watch it from beginning to end...
What are your plans for the holiday weekend?
1. work on dollythings with the Doosh
2. eat hot dogs with the Doosh
3. be lazy with the Doosh
pretty much anything but work-work. This 3 day weekend couldn't have come at a better time. Work's getting so busy, I got to hire an intern to help me out with the smaller projects keeping me from my bigger clients. On top of that, I got talked into being a teacher's assistant again this month, plus the Instructor's been sick, so I had to teach the class on Thursday (4 hours of lecturing and demo). Luckily I maintained control and got some really good work out of them, (intermediate web class - CSS + HTML) but my number 1 fear is public speaking so I was sure I'd screw up. I'm getting so much better at dealing with crowds. I've also got graduation (yey, I am a bachelor of the science of the art!) coming up and of course I waited until the last minute to turn in my survey forms (it's a small school, so they do a little speech about all of the graduates - who they'd like to thank, who they will remember most, what company they are working for now, bla, bla, bla) and I felt like crap for writing a bad speech at my Associates ceremony that I stressed over making sure it was truly appreciative this time. I hope the MC doesn't pronounce my name wrong again...
there I go blabbering on a simple QoTD.... have a great weekend everyone! get off the computer!
Are there any snacks, food or candy that are no longer made that you desperately miss?
I love this QotD. immediately after reading it, one word: TWOOKIES.
nobody seems to remember them as vividly as I do. they were like twix, only way longer and much lighter and flakier wafer cookie. they came in lots of flavors, but peanut butter was my favorite. they came in a shiny foil wrapper that just called my name. I don't remember seeing them any later than the mid 80's.
the other long lost food that I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night missing is Crispy Critters Cereal. So, so crispy and sweetened just right. I don't even care about the animal shape, if they just came up with a little puff cereal that tasted like these, I would eat nothing else for breakfast. indubitably.
I also fondly remember a strawberry candy that I used to buy at my cousin's baseball card shop, but i have no idea what they were called since i was 3 or 4 years old. They were strawberry shaped candies that came packed in a tiny version of the green baskets strawberries come in at the grocery store. they had the most unique and awesome strawberry flavor and they're gone forever!
and oh! I forgot Jell-o puddin' pops. not the puddin' pops they sell now, theones bill cosby used to push during saturday morning cartoons. those things were CREAMY. the puddin' pop of today is basically just a skinny fudgesicle.
Always Art. I remember being obnoxious and showing off how well I could cut construction paper circles in elementary school during art class, and my biggest achievement at age 5 was getting a (horrible) painting of a rainbow tree hung in a local community gallery. My teacher siad it showed out-of-the-box thinking, but really, i just ran out of room on the page and wanted to draw a tree and a rainbow, so i just put the rainbow on top of the tree. I had great hand skills, but never much vision.
Other awesome art classes I took: Monster Effects in middle school - we built big armatures out of paper and wire and made these hideous paper mache alligator-monkey looking things that eventually rotted but were great for placing in dark rooms to scare the shit out of your friends, Pinata making class in highschool - I made king kong, and an Electronics class (that served as my science requirement) where we made really pretty flashing LED sculptures and lighting effects. I almost got electrocuted on a strobe light. It was awesome.
My graduating year of high school, three of my 5 classes were art-oriented - pottery throwing, multi-media art (meaning paper/clay/metal) and figure drawing.
Bummer I can't draw worth a crap anymore thanks to my reliance on the computer.
